Tidsrejser

I presume that most mere mortals are quite unfamiliar with the feeling of travelling through time. It is a sort of itching up and down your gall-bladder, not really mistakeable for anything else. But today, as I left my meditative state at sun-rise, I had a brief feeling of having travelled back to the 1930’s without realizing it. The news spoke of a poll, stating that “more than every third dane would hate to have a roma as a neighbour, and the same tendency is true for alcoholics and drug abusers too”. Try replacing the word roma with the word jew, drug abuser with communist, and alcoholic with negro. Bingo, welcome back to the roaring 1930’s.

What really astounded me was the phrasing of these ‘news’, especially on the official news site www.dr.dk. With 2 simple sentences, it was stated that romas, drug abusers and alcoholics were equally undesireable, despite the fact that most people would probably not know what makes a person roma, or would be able to pinpoint the alcoholics in the little homes of north Zealand, where all the rich ‘humans’ live. And if this piece of news is repeated often enough, then noone will be left with any doubt that the worst neighbours are drug abusers, romas and alcoholics.

To make matters even better, it is no more than a month since the news could report that 23 romas had been arrested and expelled from Denmark. Expelled, one thinks, and one can’t help but remember how sometimes murderers, drug dealers and child abusers get a citizenship, despite their previous crimes. And the law (no need to state the specific paragraph, it is listed in the danish text) states that you can expel EU citizens if they are a possible threath to public order. Organized theft, yes, that part would fall into the ‘threath to public order’ category. But wouldn’t there be a trial where the “innocent until proven guilty” romas were taken before a judge, who could decide whether or not they were criminals, or in any other way a threath to public order? Naaah, they are just roma, no need to bother with that.

Next time you read an article about romas, or hear anyone talk about romas in general, try a funny game I invented. Replace ‘roma’ with ‘jew’, and see if you can find the same text in articles from the 1930- and 40’s from Germany. All that we need now, is some scientist finding a disease primarily found amongst romas, but contagious to real humans too, then we should be all set to ban romas from walking amongst decent people.
